I was worried about Christmas this year. Money was tight....tighter than it had been in quite some time. No pay raises or cost of living increases plus an increase in insurance premiums amounted to a pay cut this year and then we had the multiple appliances rebel and the veterinary emergencies. Frankly, it sucked. And, the kids were older which meant wishes tended to be more expensive. Luckily, the older two kids know the secret about Santa so we were able to explain how tight money was. But, I still wanted to make Christmas special. Luckily, we had a few small influxes of cash and that enabled us to get a few of the things the kids were really wanting and I had the volcano for Gabe. I was still fretting about Christmas though.
I shouldn't have worried though. I should have just remembered how special my kids are because according to my boys, "This was the best Christmas ever." Talk about perfect.

Clearly you have boys whose core needs are well met.
I think that we do our children a favor when we don't make holidays (or even life) all about the stuff. So kudos to you, Kristin, for making it about what's really important.

Aww Kristin, how sweet. Your boys are so smart and this post just made me feel all warm and tingly. We did not do much and the girls still seemed to be really happy. Simple is always best to me!

That's lovely, what great kids. I've been trying to get comfortable with having less. It's challenging, but I'm encouraged by your children's reaction. Hopefully my family will feel the same :)

Aw, "best Christmas ever" just warms my heart. They certainly know what the true spirit of Christmas is.
What a fantastic ending realization! So often we worry about things that fall away in importance when it's all said and done. My family was in a similar financial position this year. After exchanging gifts via the "draw a name" method (and putting an even lower maximum spending cap on it this year), we sat together and watched a marathon of Man Versus Food while drinking mulled wine and eating homemade ChexMix. It was a great way to spend the holiday.
How heartwarming to hear from your kids! I think it's us parents that actually put the pressure on ourselves to give more than necessary. Kids really are easy to please. :-)
