"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. " -Helen Keller

Faced With Evidence of My Own Insanity

I do a good time of convincing myself I'm relatively sane on most days. But, tonight, I was faced with incontrovertible evidence of my insanity.

See, every year, the cub scouts sell popcorn and every scout who sells popcorn gets to select a prize. The possible prizes vary greatly depending on how much popcorn a scout sells. Hell, the prizes vary greatly within each prize level. Joey kicked some serious butt this year and sold over $700 worth of popcorn. At that level, he had a whole slew of prizes to chose from...everything from pocket knives to hiking kits to gift cards and more.

What did I let him come home with? Well, this is it...
Yes, folks, I let my 9 yr old order a real box and arrow set. Why do I have visions of ER visits dancing in front of my eyes? I guess it should be fairly safe if I keep the arrows under my firm control. Bwahahahaha, who am I kidding. He will find a way to shoot something from it even if it isn't an arrow. Pray for our eyes and limbs. We may not escape unscathed.

My neighbor had one of those once and accidentally shot it into his parents above-ground pool. All was fine until he removed the arrow. Since I know you don't have a pool you might be safe. ;-)

All joking aside, why don't you find a program in your area that will show him how to use it properly? The boy scouts probably run such a program (I did it in the girl scouts), or a local agency? It will instill respect for it and give him target practice in a safe location. Congrats to Joey on such a good sale!

My son would be SO excited. Popcorn sales are not his favorite thing.

Good luck and have fun!

My husband was an Eagle Scout. I'm glad your son is in scouts coz they have excellent programs. I bet he can learn how to use the bow and arrow *responsibly* with some guidance from the scouts. I know they learn that stuff at scout camp.

Question: What does Anissa need help with??? The Paypal link does not say. Oddly...the captcha for this one was "anissill." :-)

LOLOL....I guess your older boys would now be organizing a first aid kit.....

It is a dangerous toy, and maybe you can convince your boy to do it in 'safe places' or so....

BTW, I loved your comment on my post, and am now keen on watching the movie. I have to find out what the funny thing was.

LOL... oh lady, you are insane! Honestly the first thing that came to mind (after an image of Joey going all William Tell on Gabe) was 'at least he didn't get lawn darts'.

Have fun with that!

Sounds like a good way for him to get a first aid and/or lifesaving badge (do they have that?). LOL.

Eh, it's a JUNIOR archery set - it's not lethal, just mildly dangerous. :)

Wow!! I guess in the boy's eyes you are Mom of the year!

You'll shoot yer eye out!!! LOL, I couldn't resist.

Eh, he'll be fine... Junior sets are blunt (and I assume his aim will not yet be accurate enough to hit anyone/thing in the eye, lol). Hell, all the kids in our extended family get a BB gun for their 8th b-day, and we're all ok (ish).
