"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. " -Helen Keller

SHOW AND TELL: Wildlife In Miniature

Lately, I've been lucky enough to get some awesome pics of some of the smaller members of the wildlife kingdom. I hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I do. The first and third pics are clickable for larger images.
Anyone know what type of butterfly this is? I've been too lazy busy to find out
Fire ants are beautiful as long as you avoid the sting.
Did you know that the Daddy Longlegs is really one of the most poisonous spiders in the world but it is completely harmless to people because its mouth is too small to bite us? Barb pointed out and Snopes confirmed) that this is a myth. Sorry for perpetuating this but I really did see this on a nature show.
World's coolest caterpillar! And, in answer to a question asked, yes I touched it and noticed no reaction to the fur.

That catapillar is soo cute. It reminds me of those fuzzy fake ones that were popular in the '80's.
I don't know what type of butterfly and I do know how much red ant bite hurt!

I love the butterfly picture! Thanks for sharing with us. You must have a great camera to be able to capture these great shots. Anytime I try to zoom in with my camera, it's all blurry!

Great pictures! Wow, I wish I could take pics like that :-)

And thanks for the "did you know", I love trivia (and no, I didn't know..)

Oooooooooh wildlife. You will have to excuse me, for this is my nerdom.

I believe that is a Viceroy butterfly, but I'm not positive. It's the monarch mimic, so not poisonous to some animals to eat like the monarch is, but tries to pretend so it can survive. :)

And in fact, daddy long legs (the Harvestman) are not venomous or poisonous in the slightest. That's an urban legend. :) There are actually very few venomous arachnids in our country (black widow and brown recluse maybe the only two?)

Wow, I actually saw that bit about Daddy Longlegs on a tv program. Thanks for the correction.

I think the butterfly is a swallowtail...Barb the Viceroy is more orange than yellow..but hey, I could be wrong :)

I would like you to send me one of those caterpillars, they are ADORABLE!!!! And I had no idea about the daddy long legs!

I shall not comment about anything to do with my one and only phobia.

I'm curious if you touched the caterpillar. My son thinks the 'fur' has an irritant in/on it. Which if that was true and you knew that, I would assume you wouldn't touch it. That's a long way of asking if you know.
I remember seeing swallowtails a lot as a kid. Not so much anymore.
Great pictures!

Wow, those are great pictures. I love the butterfly and the catapillar.
I too have heard that the daddy long legs are poisonous but saw that someone pointed out they aren't. As far as venomous spiders I know of one other I think. The hobo spider I believe is and it's bites are sometimes blamed on the brown recluse.

Those are very COOL! I have always loved caterpillars, for some strange reasons.

Spiders and ants, not so much.

Butterflies, of course.

Great pictures! I don't know what kind of butterfly that is, but it does look like a yellow monarch. I though swallowtails were black and blue.

Love the caterpillar. My MIL always has plenty in her yard. I wish I had pictures of the ones she had last year. They were very funky.

I could live without the daddy longlegs though...

My daughter has a butterfly book, but she's already gone to bed. I will ask her to find you a name for your beautiful butterfly. I'm amazed that you have been able to get such great, close-up photos of these insects. That fluffy caterpillar is amazing. I've never seen anything like it.
