"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. " -Helen Keller

Road Trip

I'm so excited. Tomorrow, my mom and I are climbing into her car and driving about 3 hours to go to a book signing/meet the author event.  I'll finally get to meet (in person) my dear friend and incredibly talented author, Rachel Simon.

Early in the summer of 2010, Cecily put out the word that a friend of her's was looking for people to review one of her books. I am so glad I told Cecily I wanted in because that's how I hooked up with Rachel. Back then, I got to read Rachel's incredible book, The House on Teacher's Lane. I felt like I got such a clear picture of who Rachel was and I truly could see the beauty of her spirit. I guess she must have liked what I said about the book because we've been in touch ever since and I even got to read and review her current and most amazing book, The Story of Beautiful Girl. I owe Cecily a big one because without her, I never would have found Rachel's friendship.

In addition to getting to finally meet a friend, I get to go on a road trip with my mommy. It will be so cool to get to spend time with my mom without the kids in tow. God, it's been ages since we've had more than an hour or two together. After losing my brother-in-law so suddenly in January, it has become so important to me to grab every chance I have to spend time with my loved ones. It's going to be so much fun.

When's the last time you went on a road trip? Where did you go and who did you take the trip with? Tell me all about it.

I went on a road trip with my daughter at the beginning of the month. We were going to my aunt's memorial service about 5 hours away. She was fairly excited to see her cousins and aunts and uncles and my mom, and especially my sister's dog. So we got about 30 minutes away from home and she started asking "Are we there yet?" I was ready to kick her out of the car by hour 3. When we were finally about 45 minutes away, she said "Maybe I should just say that in my head." I was all "Ya think?!"

I hope you and your mom enjoy your road trip! Drive safely!
Oooo... have fun on the road with your mom!

My last big road trip was last summer, when we went to K-town to visit my parents. It was Ginny's first road trip, and she did really well on the way out there, but the trip home was another story. I don't know if we're stupid or what, but we are planning the same road trip this coming summer. Ginny will be about 20 months and the Halfling will be 2 months old. Yikes! I think we might split it into two days of travel... 10 hours at one shot with a newborn might be a bit much.
Here from ICLW: How lucky are you to go on a road trip with you mom! I'm so jealous :)

Last road trip I went on was two weekends ago. My Hubby and I drove up to Vancouver from Seattle and spent a long weekend. It was so much fun! We love road trips!!
Yes, please drive safely!! My last real road trip ended in an accident, but I still love road trips and want to do more.

My last road trip was from Maryland to Independence, MO, with my friend Paige for a conference for our service fraternity. We made it as far as central MO, and it had been a great trip despite going through the night, including belting out "We Didn't Start The Fire" along the Pennsylvania Turnpike at midnight. Unfortunately, in central MO, about an hour away from our destination, I came across a tire tread in the road with no real time to react, and we ended up flipping the car. I got off with a sprained ankle, and Paige is ok now.

The aftermath of that accident was where I felt the love and support of my Brothers more than at any time in the past, though. One member of our national Board of Directors picked me up at the hospital (dropping his usual joking manner and just holding out his arms to give me a hug when he saw me). Other Brothers made sure my husband got picked up at the airport and taken to the hotel. My local representative to the Board gave me clothes to sleep in and just let me talk. Other Brothers gave me clothes for the next day. A Board member from across the country drove us to get stuff out of my car the next day and to pick Paige up from the hospital. I had a past national President telling me to take my meds when she could see me in pain. Just overall it was a really powerful reminder of why I joined the fraternity 10 years ago and why I continue to give it so much of my time and money today.

Now that I've talked your ear off, happy ICLW! :-p
