"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. " -Helen Keller

2011 Book Challenge Wrap Up and 2012 Sign Up

2011 Book Challenge Wrap Up

Wooohooooo, it's only January 6th and I'm posting the yearly book challenge post. That's a hell of a lot better than last year's February 25th post.

Sadly, I didn't meet my reading goal for last year. I was shooting for 110 books last year and it was looking like I'd hit the goal without a problem. But, my time management skills went to hell in a handbasket when my friend Rys and her family moved in in September and I ended the year with 95 books. I hope the rest of y'all had a great year and did lots and lots of reading. I'd love for y'all to check in and tell me how many books you read.

And, the final bit of 2011 book challenge business, Alana of Alana-isms is the tote bag winner.

2012 Book Challenge Sign Up

It's time to sign up for the 2012 Book Challenge. Once again, sign up will be through Google Docs because it will compile the list and keep all the info handy for me. However, unlike last year, I won't promise to keep in touch via email over the course of the year because, obviously, I suck at that. So, here are the rules...

  1. Please use this Google Docs form to sign up...comment if you like but sign up is through the form.
  2. your goal can be as high or low as you feel comfortable with...the goal is to read more, not to beat everyone else
  3. read, read, read
  4. keep a running total
  5. have fun
  6. if it is under 50 pages or an audio book, it counts as HALF a book
  7. anything over 50 pages counts as 1 BOOK no matter how long it is
  8. textbooks, childrens books, ebooks all count
  9. (thanks Jenn) rereading counts and any books read so far count
  10. cookbooks count as a whole book if you actually read them (I mean really read...not just skim while looking for a recipe)
Once again, I want to say thanks to Jen J for Navigating the Waters of Infertility and Beyond again because she was the one that sparked my Book Challenge in 2009. This year, my reading goal is going to be 110 books.Hopefully, life will remain on an even keel and I can read to my heart's content.

Oh hell...if I knew childrens books counted--I would have been there in 2011!! :-)
I'm hoping that my ability to read (I have crap for focus these days) will improve this year. I miss it so much. Last year I didn't even hit 40 books... this from the woman who used to read close to 20 books a month. Ugh.

I don't think I signed up last year although I did keep track and I beat previous records by reading 87 books this year. Almost 88 but that last one I still had 50 or so pages left by New Years.
I am so pleased I reached my goal of 25! I have a very busy year ahead with studies and so will be doing a lot of reading and research, it may be tricky for me to count exactly what I read as it will be different chapters from different text books and lots of papers. I will have a think before I sign up for this years!

You could count pages instead of books...that would work.
I sucked at reaching my goal last year, as well, so hopefully I'll do better this year! I'm aiming for 50 books. We'll see how I do!
Kristen, I can't even get through a magazine at this point. There are 3 books on my night stand. So wish I could participate.
Well, I didn't come anywhere near my goal for the 2011 challenge. I read 13 out of 24 books. However, in my defense, one of those was the Bible. The ENTIRE Bible. In a little over 90 days. (Don't I get extra credit or something for that???)

My goal for 2012 is the same as last year. 24 books. Hopefully I'll reach and maybe even surpass that goal!
OOH, I almost forgot...

If anyone is on Goodreads, they have an easy 2012 reading challenge widget you can add to your blog. I love Goodreads, it's a great way to keep track of your progress.
Hey! I'm here! =)

I've been reading your blog on my Crapberry and because it's a piece of complete and total garbage it won't let me comment - but I have been reading. Thanks for the shout out!

I made it to 45 last year =( but this year I'm GOING TO get to 50. Seriously. I'll get there - unless we adopt a baby in which case I won't feel like a slacker for missing the goal!

And as a shameless plug... any of your readers (who don't live in Duluth, MN) who want an invitation to read my blog let me know... it's private just because my DH doesn't want his students reading it.
Only made 34.5 in 2011 so shooting for 45 again this year.
Grrrr. I just tried to update my book challenge list and it didn't save. Will have to count and try again. Anyway---I'm a winner, winner chicken dinner. AWESOME! Thank you for hosting. :)
