Cool photos!! Love the dinner bowl one, and what a cool doorknob. (never thought I'd hear myself say that to anyone!) :)
You asked about photo editing...I use Picasa to do most of my editing. It gets the job done and offers some cool effects. Very user-friendly after you are familiar with where everything is. For the edited picture, I just pulled the shadows down and raised the highlights. Nothing difficult, but it ends up pretty cool in most photos.
To get those little frames/tiles, I used this site:

They also have some cool things you can add to your photos. I love that site.
